Description
Looking for a great change of pace chart for your next performance? “Night Wing” from the pen of Bret Zvacek is the perfect choice. An infectious straight eighth note groove, great ensemble writing and plenty of space for solos all combine to create a chart that will be a favorite of both the band and the audience. Great writing!
Program Notes
The jazz/rock/soul hybrid style known as Fusion produced some of the most creative and diverse music of the jazz tradition, starting in 1969 and continuing well into the 1980’s. “Night Wing” is written in the jazz fusion style and is an homage to this great era of music.
As a style guide for “Night Wing”, listen to Herbie Hancock’s “Butterfly” from his 1974 recording “Thrust”, where you will find good models of rhythm section concept, ensemble sound, and overall vibe.
Observe the tempo marking strictly. With the exception of the solo section, the rhythm parts are fairly detailed and need to be played as written. Pay particular attention to locking in the relationship between the bass player and drummer’s bass drum, which is key to this style.
The horn parts are generally not difficult. Strive for transparency, blend, and warmth of sound within the ensemble. Measure 49 is the solo section, where the rhythm section is free to take liberties playing behind the soloists.
