Island Time

Description

The bossa nova style is one of the most important grooves in jazz. Composer and educator Brad Ciechomski has penned a wonderful vehicle for introducing your students to this important style. Beautiful scoring and a solid melody make this chart a great choice for developing bands. With an abundance of great ensemble work and some nice solo space, this one will be a wonderful change of pace on any concert or festival program.

Program Notes

When vacationing on an island, we were running late for our dinner reservations. I called the restaurant worried we’d lose our table on the deck. The host said,”Hey Mon, no worries. You’re on Island Time. When you come we have a table for you on our deck, Relax and enjoy some Island Time”. With this in mind, I decided to take a little island time back to my usual schedule.

“Island Time” is a medium up tempo Bossa, that should lock in from the intro through the coda. With comfortable ranges and rhythms, this mature sounding piece will allow your band to sound confident in the Bossa style. The intro sets the mood, taking the band on a chromatic climb into the main theme that’s shared across the ensemble. The chromatic climb returns, heading into the improv section. Suggested solos are provided however these playable changes allow soloists to explore on their own. A chromatic ensemble build leads us to the recap. The piece is easily playable and mature sounding. So, take a trip to the islands this concert season with this very playable bossa nova, “Island Time”.
