Through the Looking Glass - Steve Parsons

Description

Mysterious and ethereal, “Through the Looking Glass” explores all the colors of the string orchestra. Frequent modulations and clever harmonic movement add to the total effect. The faster “B” section continues the mystery, shifting between major and minor.

Program Notes

Alice experienced many adventures as written by Lewis Carroll, and my favorite was always the “sequel,” Through the Looking-Glass. Starting with Alice passing through a mirror into a new fantastic world, and featuring the quirky tale of the Jabberwock, the chess matches of the Red and White Queens, and the infamous Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the second book has plenty of story around which to write a piece. Moving my theme for Alice through major and minor key centers to depict the shifting, whimsical nature of the circumstances in which she finds herself, I’ve scored this work like a mini movie.
