Description
Chiquinha Gonzaga was a well-known composer from Brazil who, it is estimated, had 2,000 pieces to her credit. Dión Morales has crafted an arrangement of “Ai que Broma” that captures the vitality and rhythmic motion of the music of Brazil and is a showcase for the entire ensemble.
Program Notes
Gonzaga’s original version of “Ai Que Broma!” was a 4-verse song with lyrics written by Ernesto Matoso. The song is a comedic, light-hearted love story about love at first sight. The couple in this song are excited to be married and live happily ever after but quickly realize that they don’t speak the same language! Despite this fact, the couple try to lead with their hearts. How does this story end? Well, every verse ends with the statement, “Ai Que Broma!” which in English roughly translates to, “Oh What a Mess.” So, I am guessing that this story doesn’t end happily ever after.
