Description
Wow! This chart swings from top to bottom. The vibe of Don Menza’s tune for Buddy Rich, called ‘Groovin’ Hard,’ is at the heart of this new chart by Dave Hanson. It’s a great opener or closer for a festival performance!
Program Notes
This chart is in the tradition of Don Menza’s “Groovin’ Hard”, which means confident, strong accents that really pop, a great heavy swing feel with ‘attitude’, and driving through to the end without flagging in intensity.
There are solos for Tenor 1 and Bari Sax, and notice that the Bari solo is not so lengthy as to wear out a younger player’s chops, and both soloists are provided with optional written out solos. One key for soloists (and directors!) is to understand that this chart’s chord changes are basically “Fever” with a bridge-actually very simple when you keep that in mind! There is ample opportunity for the drummer to use fills to set up ensemble hits, and these are clearly indicated in the drum part.
“Full Steamin” provides a context for younger players to experience the exhilarating feeling of playing solid tutti ensemble figures as well as unison and harmonized section writing. The Saxes have a great moment for the latter at 100-114. Remember that all non-slurred notes should be played with legato jazz phrasing. The rhythm section should please notice the changes from a ‘2’ to a ‘4’ feel and back at 18 and 130.
Enjoy!
