Early Morning

Description

Programming the right ballad is always a challenge. “Early Morning” by Doug Beach will make that decision a little easier. Written to feature your choice of Alto Sax, Trumpet or Tenor Sax, this beautiful ballad will be a memorable choice on any program. The pensive melody is supported by warmly scored backgrounds that build as the chart unfolds. The double time ensemble section provides a wonderful contrast to the ballad feel. A must have chart for any library.

Program Notes

“Early Morning” was written to feature your choice of Alto Sax, Tenor Sax or Trumpet. All eighth notes should be played evenly throughout the chart.

Following the introduction, the soloist is featured until the ensemble takes over on the bridge at bar 21. Articulations in the Bones and rhythm section are important here. The soloist moves to improvisation at bar 37 where a light implied double time takes over. The double time figures should be interpreted in the swing style here.

The tempo does double at bar 53. The swing groove should feel the same as it did back at 37, but the tempo is doubled. The soloist returns at bar 69 as the ballad feel is reinstated. The soloist then takes the chart out quietly.
