Program Notes
“Bayview Drive” is a shuffle with a hard swinging groove. The chart features fun, riff style melodies, nice counterpoint, bluesy harmonies and a solo for Trombone 1. After the solo there are strong unison passages followed by a roaring, richly-scored shout chorus. To make the most of the chart, emphasize the groove and the dynamics. There is a suggested, written solo for the trombone soloist; but your soloist should be encouraged to improvise. The chord changes are approachable: Bb9 to Eb9 and the following blues scales may be used throughout: Bb, C, Db, F, G, and Bb, Db, Eb, E, F, Ab. The Bass and Piano parts are written out with chords cued and the chart may be played by as few as three Saxophones (AAT), two Trumpets, one Trombone and three rhythm (PBD), or any combination all the way up to a full big band.
