Description
Master arranger Carl Strommen has a knack for making easy charts for young ensembles sound full and solid, and “Over the Moon” is a great example of this talent. Filled with lots of tutti rhythms and ensemble figures, this piece will be a breeze to put together for a developing jazz ensemble.
Program Notes
“Over the Moon” is based on the chord changes to a tune that comes from the great American songbook called “How High the Moon”. These chord changes have been used on many other Jazz tunes, most famously, the Charlie Parker piece called “Ornithology”. This chart is on the uptempo side of Swing, but will certainly work at a slightly slower tempo. The ensemble is featured throughout this chart which makes it an ideal piece for working on balance, blend and phrasing and it also makes a solid concert selection.
