This lovely, lyrical piece, set in 4/4 time and the key of G minor throughout, offers the opportunity to play expressively and convey a feeling of reflection on times gone by. With shared melodic lines, the techniques reinforced include 2-note slurs, hooked bowings, accents, pizzicato, divisi, terraced dynamics (M.19–M.23), and bow distribution (e.g., up bow retake after long down bow, M.71).
After the recap of the melody at M.60, there is an interplay between Viola and Cello (M.64) leading to a satisfying conclusion. First Violins have a few notes in 3rd position. Piano is optional.
