Program Notes

“The Huron Carol”, also known as “’Twas in the Moon of Wintertime”, is considered Canada’s first Christmas hymn. Written in 1643 by Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf, it was originally composed in the Huron-Wendat language. The hymn uniquely expresses the Nativity story using Indigenous imagery and cultural references. Over time, the carol was translated into French and English, allowing it to spread beyond its origins.

Its haunting melody is shared among all instruments in this arrangement. The Percussion part is easy enough for one student to handle-or for a helpful parent-and it adds a lot of character to the performance.
