While easy from a technical standpoint, “Topaz Dawn” offers students a challenge in the form of musicality and emotive playing. This piece is about connecting with audiences and each other through heartfelt musical moments.
Program Notes
While technically quite easy, “Topaz Dawn” presents musical challenges beyond rapid passages of notes. My hope is that students will be drawn into the beauty of music created by long, flowing melodies that develop into an evocative and emotional soundscape. This is a piece where musicians must fully “buy into” the idea of sharing a heartfelt moment with each other and with the audience.
My guess is that this piece might not be the students’ favorite at the first rehearsal or two, but I hope that as they become invested in the music, it will become a highlight for them at the first performance.
